Alongside Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority, Uber annoucned earlier today that they will begin rolling out their low-cost UberX service across the emirate effective immediately.
Previously, Uber had been barred from offering the economy service locally due to transport regulations requiring privately hired cars to charge rates at 30 per cent above the rate of an RTA taxi.
It appears that a consensus has been reached between Uber and the RTA, allowing the company to launch the service in a limited trial-run which will be reviewed after a 3-month period at which point it will be decided if it will carry on or be scrapped.
Pricing-wise, the new service is a little more in line with standard taxi fares starting at a base rate of AED 5, then charged at AED1.37 per km or AED0.4 per minute.
