LG’s bezel-less wonder phone is hitting our shores this month
At an event this morning in Dubai, Korean electronics giant LG announced the arrival of its 2017 flagship smartphone, the LG G6, to the Middle East.
The phone originally debuted in March at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and was heralded as a return to form for the company after it’s modular approach to last year’s G5 didn’t take off as well as the company expected.
The G6 has all the hallmarks of top-tier 2017 smartphone, with its standout feature being a near bezel-less 5.7in QHD+ screen that, for the first time ever in a smartphone, boasts a 18:9 aspect ratio rather than the 16:9 dimensions we’ve come to expect from handsets.
This change in format allows the screen to be taller, offering more viewing space for video or surfing the web, in both portrait and landscape. The screen also supports both HDR 10 and Dolby Vision standards giving it vastly superior picture quality compared to last year’s model.
On the inside, the LG G6 boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor putting it in line with the likes of Huawei and HTC, but lagging behind Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 which will be the first of the 2017 flagships to include Qualcomm’s new – and much anticipated – Snapdragon 835 chip. The handset is equipped with 4GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage, upgradable to 2TB via the MicroSD card slot.
The G6 is both water and dust resistant with an IP68 rating meaning it can be dunked in up to 1.5 metres of water for up to 30 minutes without suffering any issues.
On the camera front, LG has once again included a dual rear camera setup, this time both with 13MP sensors, however one is a wide-angle 125-degree lens, while the other sits at a standard 71-degrees and has Optical Image Stabalisation smarts. The 5MP front camera has a wide-angle 100-degree lens for taking expansive selfies should you so wish.
One neat thing that LG has included is a ‘Square Camera Mode’ that formats photos for use in social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. Users can also preview images, as the screen splits evenly in half thanks to the G6’s 18:9 aspect ratio.
The LG G6 is currently available for preorder from all major electronics retailers in the UAE and will officially go on sale 18 April for US$710. The phone will be available in Astro Black, Ice Platinum and Mystic White.
