Are you as hyped for Comic Con as we are but can’t wait until 5 April to get your geek on?

Well, you’re in luck because the organisers of the Middle East Film & Comic Con have teamed up with Times Square Center for Dubai’s first ever GeekFest.

This three-week takeover of the popular shopping mall promises to be haven for all things pop-culture. Taking place between 15 March – 4 April, it’s free to attend and open to geeks of all ages, packed with activities, activations and competitions from the mall’s various outlets in everything from science fiction, fantasy, technology and gaming.

Each week has its own overarching theme that focuses on different areas of geekdom:

  • Week 1 – The World of Geeks – 15-21 March
  • Week 2 – E-Sports and More – 22-28 March
  • Week 3 – BoardGame Madness – 29 March – 4 April

GET A KICK OF NOSTALGIA AND ENJOY SOME RETRO GAMING

One of our favourite highlights of GeekFest has to be its commitment to retro gaming. Over the entire three weeks there is a dedicated Retro Gaming Zone where visitors can take a trip down virtual memory lane and play classic titles like Super Mario Kart for the SNES, Virtua Striker for the Sega Dreamcast, Space Invaders for the Atari 2600 and many many more.

The best part? It’s completely free so you can get in a quick game of Goldeneye 007  on the Nintendo 64 in between checking out all of GeekFest’s other attractions.

TEST YOUR L33TNESS IN AN E-SPORTS TOURNAMENT

Fancy yourself a dab hand at video games? Then you’ll want to sign up for the GeekFest e-sports tournament to show of your skills.

Taking place over two full days, you’ll be able to go up against other talented gamers on the latest Asus ROG hardware in either a 32-player League of Legends tournament or a 16-player Fortnite face-off.

There are 60 Comic Con passes up for grabs as prizes as well as serious bragging rights amongst your friends.

BREAK OUT THE CARDBOARD AND PLAY SOME BOARD GAMES

Times Square Centre is home to Back To Games, Dubai’s only specialty board game shop, and you can bet your 10-sided dice that they will be bringing a host of great titles to play over the course of GeekFest.

They will be holding a number of tournaments throughout the three weeks, with the largest concentration happening over the final seven days of GeekFest in what is being dubbed as “BoardGame Madness”

You can look forward to flexing your mental muscles in any of the following titles: Magic the Gathering, Star Wars: X-Wing, Android Netrunner, Dr. Eureka, Splendor, Dominion, Pandemic & Ticket to Ride.

DRESS UP YOUR KIDS AS THEIR FAVOURITE SUPERHERO AND ENTER THE COSPLAY COMPETITION

Comic Con and its annual cosplay competition is the stuff of legend. People come from far and wide to show off their amazing costume creations, and GeekFest is looking to recreate some of that magic.

The first GeekFest Cosplay & Fancy Dress competition in partnership with Kidz Palooza encourages visitors aged between 3 and 12 to come up with the zaniest costumes they can and take part in a parade around the mall with judges from Comic Con on hand to mark the contestants.

Spots are limited so make sure you register your tykes online before 25 March so they can strut their stuff and stand a chance to win Power Pass Comic Con tickets and Kidz Palooza prize hampers.

BUILD YOURSELF A ROBOT FRIEND

For those with more of a ‘maker’ streak, GeekFest offers plenty of opportunities to let your inner master builder out.

The CR8 Robotics Training Lab gives kids and adults the opportunity to get a little education alongside their entertainment with daily robotics classes. Visitors will learn to build and program their own robo-friend, not only having fun but learning valuable skills in the process.

And for those who love to build with blocks, LEGO will be on hand with a massive selection of their ubiquitous colourful bricks to let your imagination run wild as you build your most geeky creations.

WIN A TRIP TO TOKYO GAME SHOW 2018 (AND OTHER AWESOME PRIZES)

Yep, that’s right, GeekFest is giving visitors the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the home of geekdom itself, Tokyo, Japan. The prize package includes a holiday trip for two to the awesome 2018 Tokyo Game Show, with flights and hotel stay for 4 days/3 nights.

All you need to do to enter is spend AED 200 from any Times Square Center outlet between 15 March – 4 April to qualify for the raffle draw.
