iPhone 5 will pack 4G LTE but it won’t work in the UAE

At tonight’s launch event, Apple revealed that the iPhone 5 will support LTE and 4G data speeds (it also supports all the usual bands: GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA). For the record, LTE supports download speeds of up to 100Mbps.
Unfortunately, neither Etisalat or Du currently support LTE or proper 4G, yet. If either does want to bring the iPhone 5 up to wireless speed in the UAE though, they’ll have to make sure to support the 1800MHz LTE band.
Thanks to the iPhone 5‘s new dual-switching antennae though, it’s be faster than the last. HSPA+ will go up to 21Mbps, and DC-HSDPA will hit speeds up to 42Mbps. There’s also new Wi-Fi, with 802.11n letting you hit download speeds of up to 150Mbps.

I thought du LTE was on the 1800 mhz band? the GSM A1429 model supports 1800MHZ….
iPhone 5 will operate on LTE networks running at the 700 and 2100 megahertz frequencies, which are used by operators in the United States; however, most of the Middle East’s 4G networks operate at the 2600 and 1800 ranges.
Etisalat and du both moved to 1800 MHz so yes you are right GSM A1429 will work just fine, the article need correction, I think the writer didn’t know there is two GSM version of the iPhone 5.
Both Etisalat and du have LTE 4G in the UAE, but only du supports the 1800 MHz frequency band. Etisalat is 2600 MHz only.
Both Etisalat and du moved to 1800 MHz earlier this year, so iPhone 5 (GSM Model A1429) will work just fine…
Hi, I use LTE with Sierra Wireless, labeled Telstra in Dubai and i works fine. I will test LG Optimus HD LTE and Tiny Dovado with LTE modem.
How about model A1429? Check apple site http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/. It looks like 1800MHz is available and will work in the UAE?
The information in the article is incorrect. du supports LTE on 1800.
Yes. This article is incorrect. Both Etisalat and Du support the 2600/1800 MHz Band. The iPhone 5 for European markets will do 2100/1800/850 MHz so it should work with the 1800 MHz Band.
Etisalat supports both 1800 and 2600 MHZ however Du only supports 1800 MHz
Can I get one iPhone5 for free to test if our African networks can handle it? Just one, please!
I think the more relevant reason that iPhone 5 will not work in the UAE is that it uses a nano-SIM (versus a micro-SIM in iPhone 4S and normal SIM in previous versions). You can simply “cut” a normal SIM to make it into a micro-SIM but you can’t do that for a nano-SIM (which is also a bit thinner). Du and Etisalat have not rolled out micro-SIMs yet and until they do, whenever that may be, you won’t be able to use the iPhone 5 on the networks here.
Last sentence is meant to read “Du and Etisalat have not rolled our nano-SIMs yet and until they do…”
Actually, you can cut a micro sim down further by trimming all of the plastic to turn it into a nano sim. The 4FF sim as it’s formally called, is backwards compatible using adapter with the micro Sim and Standard Sim format.
I started discussing it here: http://forums.jadopado.com/discussion/6/issue-1-with-the-new-iphone-5-nano-sims (No plug intended!)
It may be backwards compatible, meaning you can use an adapter to insert a nano-SIM into a micro-SIM or Standard SIM slot. But not the other way around. You can cut all the edges and plastic around a Standard/Micro SIM to make it the same length x width dimensions of a nano-SIM. But how can you whittle down the thickness of it? Standard SIM and Micro-SIMs are 0.79mm thick, whereas the nano-SIM is 0.67mm thick, and there isn’t a way to get around that…

RY, you are right, the Nano-Sim Card are backwards compatible. but if you cut the micro-sim card it will not work on iPhone 5.
Du’s statement on iPhone 5:

Dear friend
I ask the shopkeeper and he cut my two micro sim by one special tool for nano and those working good in iPhone 5
You can reduce the thickness by using a Fine grade sanding paper as mentioned on some blogs on the net.
Rest assured everyone, the 1429 GSM model will definitely work in the UAE. For your refrence, here’s a list of all major LTE networks around the world: both du and etisalat use Band 3 (1800 MHz).

We all have to wait and see how it will go , although many websites like http://www.geegzy.com are selling 4G LTE supported version which i guess is compatible with 4G here

I actually use an iPad 4 (European/Verizon/Sprint model) with an Etisalat Micro-SIM Prepaid and it works fine with Dubai LTE. The US (AT&T model) will only use 3G until 42 Mbit/s
