IBM Labs augmented reality shopping app

If you’re a conscientious shopper – whether you have allergies or you’re just being eco-conscious – checking all the labels on your supermarket shop can be a bit of a pain. Luckily, IBM Labs is coming to the rescue with some augmented reality tech.

The boffins at the Big Blue have developed a smartphone app that lets you enter in a user profile with your shopping requirements and preferences, and then serves up information when you point your phone camera at the product packaging.

The app’s still in the testing stage at the moment, but according to IBM Labs, it could deliver information including prices, ingredients, discounts and even user reviews.

AR has already been used on toy packaging to let you view the product without having to take it out of the box – now it looks like the technology is about to grow up.
