Is Apple building a 3D interface?

apple_3D-patent

Apple has filed a patent for 3D screen technology. Sure the iPad 3 is likely coming at the start of March, but far less likely is that it’ll be 3D. The chances of future devices containing this tech is fairly high though, if this patent is anything to go by.

This is special because objects in the screen gain focus and depth as you look at them thanks to the device tracking your eye movements. So as you look at certain areas they are expanded in a sort of 3D environment that appears to jump out of the screen. The UI will even vary the drop-shadows of the icons based on the ambient light coming from the real world – making them look like real objects in the screen.

The best part? This was filed in 2010, meaning the technology could be on its way soon.
