RIM confirms the PlayBook will run Android apps

It’s not all about Apple’s slate you know, there’s also news from RIM’s BlackBerry-flavoured tablet, the PlayBook. Very good news, in fact, with a representative from the Canadian tech firm confirming that its business-centric tablet will run Android apps.

It all started back in January, with a rumour that the PlayBook might come with Android app support. Since then, we’ve seen reports of Android apps running on BlackBerry handsets and stats from Google app makers. But now, a BlackBerry employee has been caught on video talking about the PlayBook, and it’s Android-friendly capabilities.

During a video demo from Mobile World Congress, an as yet unnamed BB rep is overheard saying, “We will also support Android apps when we release the Dalvik engine on top of QNX”.

Of course, this could just be some tech random blathering on about wishful thinking, or it could be a RIM employee who simply let slip the truth.

All we know is, that an Android app-running PlayBook would be a major boon to RIM’s lackluster BlackBerry App World. Heck, it means a Snesoid-running tablet (which is brilliant as is) that means business – quite literally.
