iPhone 5 willl have Toshiba-made LCD screen
Demand for Apple’s iDevices is so great that Toshiba, maker of the high-res LCD screens for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, has announced a brand new factory to double its current monthly production capacity.
Apart from the obvious, that Apple‘s next gen Touch and the iPhone 5 will sport the same LCD screen as previous models, it means Tosh could produce upwards of 17 million screens a month. That’s a lot of iPhones.
The new factory in Japan will cost 100 billion Yen (almost US$1.2 billion) and will start construction in 2011. Part funded by Apple, the new factory is slated to manufacture the first screens for Apple’s iPhone 5 when it goes online.
That’s a lot of money, and more importantly, a lot of iPhones.
