Philips 3D 21:9 Platinum Series

Philips has taken its celebrated cinema display and slapped 3D tech on it, at the same time making the world’s first cinema-friendly 3D TV.

The 58in 21:9 Platinum series will play 3D or 2D movies in 2.39:1, a film’s proper dimensions (with non of the black bars or distortion you regularly find on traditionally-specced tellys).

Behind the ginormous screen sits a back-lit LED screen, 400Hz processing and three-sided Ambilight technology (making it easy on the eyes for prolonged viewing). Philips has even taken care of the sound, building Virtual 2.1 speakers with dome tweeters into the set for rip-roaring audio.

It’s true, the 21:9 dimensions make it a must for movie-fans, but the wide-angle gogglebox will also feature handy formatting tech to make standard TV, games and DVDs fit nicely on the extra wide screen (although, we’d imagine you’ll still find black bars either side of the content). As an added bonus, Philips has plugged Net TV into the Platinum series, giving you access to online streaming and web-ready widgets.

The TV is set to launch in Europe and Brazil (huh?) later this month for US$5,125. Expect it to hit the Middle East by the end of the year.
