LG Solar Aircon sounds perfect

Posted June 22, 2010 by Thomas Shambler in Features

Especially with the summer sun currently cooking the UAE and the rest of the Middle East. This aircon from LG packs solar cells, meaning it will power itself on sunny days (so everyday) and give you lovely cool air at the same time. Sounds perfect, right?

Well, there are a few niggling snags. You see, the PV-toting central unit can generate around 70 watts of power on sunny days, which might be good for a light bulb or two, but certainly doesn’t hit air cooling-levels of power consumption. A residential AC sucks down more than 2,000 watts while running on full, which you will probably need on said sunny days.

So it’s not going to save your power bills that much, but it’s a step in the right direction, right?

No word when these will be sold (or if they’re just a manufacturer concept for the time being) but here’s to a good idea.
