MiFi mobile hotspot gets unboxed
We’ve decided to get into the unboxing game, so armed with a pair of box cutters and a hard hat, we’ll be bringing you the latest products (and their boxes) before we review them. Up today, Novatel Wireless’ MiFi 2352. It’s a SIM-friendly 3G and HSDPA mobile router that will take any data-ready SIM and pump out glorious Wi-Fi.
This MiFi device truly is tiny, with a removable battery capable of up to 48 hours of Wi-Fi. That’s not bad for something that weighs less than our mobile phone. Meant for hotspot access on the go, the MiFi unit can deliver the internet to five PCs simultaneously, as well as mobiles, media players and any other Wi-Fi enabled gadget.
Just stick a data-package-enabled SIM into the handy slot in the back (in truth, the insides look very much like a smartphone’s) and it will start piping Wi-Fi to anything nearby. It works as a traditional router, which means you’ll be able to check traffic stats as well as stick a password on to protect your network. It works like traditional 3G or HSDPA mobiles, sucking data from Etisalat or Du networks and passing them on to your PC.
It comes packed with a handy USB cable, meaning you can use it as a single PC modem or keep it charged on the go. It comes with various charging options, including a BlackBerry-esque multi-plug charger. It’s packed with all the features you’d expect from an everyday mobile too, including VPN, CDMA, Dynamic IP and NAT firewall and port forwarding options.
All in all, it looks like a nifty piece of kit, and a great option if you’ve taken advantage of Etisalat’s mobile broadband deal. We also can’t wait to test it out with an iPad – as this little mobile Wi-Fi-maker seems the perfect addition to the Apple Tablet (not to mention it saves you money on a 3G iPad).
More on the little MiFi when we publish the full review later this week. Until then, enjoy the gallery below:
