Samsung Galaxy S hits the UAE
Samsung said hello to its latest smartphone of the Android family today, in the shape of the Galaxy S – also known as the i9000.
The eagle-eyed among you might have already figured this out from this post, but rest assured the Galaxy S will soon be in shops (along with its smart brother, the Wave).
This mobile follows on from Sammy’s Galaxy and Galaxy portal Android handsets, but with much better specs. The Galaxy S boasts an amazingly crisp 4in touchscreen with Super AMOLED tech (so it’s seriously good quality) and the latest Android 2.1 OS (don’t worry Froyo-lovers, the Galaxy S will get the 2.2 upgrade in about two months).
Under the hood the Galaxy has a 1GHz processor, and capable of both recording and playing 720p HD video. One of the more exciting bit of this exceptionally sleek smartphone however, is it’s handy software. The already-installed Layar augmented reality browser makes an appearance once again, giving you advanced location services, native GPS and 3D mapping, so you don’t get lost on the way back from the tech store.
Samsung’s new Social Hub seen on the Wave is also here, giving you always-on social network updates and bringing all that lovely social media info in one place. That means things like contact info, history (calls, emails, SMS), activities (status updates or Tweets), photos and videos will all be visible in one handy place.
The hanset also introduces Samsung’s ‘Smart Life’ which gives you handy info, like a ‘daily briefing’ widget for instant access to the news, weather and diary feeds, on the homescreen.
This touchscreen mobile will also come packed with Sammy’s Swype input system, a handy addition to the onscreen QWERTY that lets you slide your finger around the screen, instead of having to push and prod. Yes, it’s a bit gimmicky but it’s a gimmick that really works.
Samsung also showed off the Galaxy S’ Wi-Fi capabilities, including the handy ability to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot. That’s right, push a button in the mobile’s settings and it will start piping out lovely Wi-Fi to any and all compatible devices. Very similar to what the next Android 2.2 update has promised, the difference being that the Galaxy S will be available in a few weeks.
Samsung promised the mobile would be out by the end of the month, for US$735.
[UPDATE: As someone quite rightly pointed out, this mobile is pretty much a smarter, sleeker, bigger-screened iPhone with better specs and the Android OS. Sounds like a win to us]
